My hometown of Sandnes is literally built on pottery. Pottemaker Simonsen was telling us all about how 7 generations back, one of his forefathers had rowed alone (in 1822) at the age of only 14, all the way from the Hardangerfjord to Sandnes to become a pottery apprentice. He stayed in Sandnes and became a famous potter eventually. His father wanted the wooden boat back, so a friend of the 14 year old young apprentice had to row it all the way back to Hardanger. The boat can be found in the Hardanger museum today.
