This was the day when we were going to test how much you can possibly manage to fit into an Audi A4 Estate. It went remarkably well, and we managed to fit in: 6 boxes of books (one containing the whole Norwegian classical literature set), 1 box of porcelaine crockery (which I miracelously managed to pack without breaking any, which for me is unusual, as for those who know me well, I am extremely clumsy). After that, 3 brown leather chairs (probably Danish 70’s, now dismantled for the first time since they were bought, just hope we remember how to reassamble them by the time we get them home to Wales). One long mahogany bench/coffee table, classic Norwegian piece from the 60’s. A couple of large framed prints and paintings, clothes and shoes, food stuff and our own suitcases, along with a couple of genuine old bamboo ski poles (handy to poke someone’s eyes out with), as well as a couple of umbrellas. Ah, and not forgetting two wooden stools, one made by my morfar (Norwegian for maternal grandfather), for my 3rd birthday, complete with my name engraved, but with the wrong date. I can still remember my mormor (Norwegian for maternal grandmother) getting angry with him for engraving the wrong date, as he had completed the stool the day before my birthday, it reads the 20th January instead of my birthday which is on the 21st. This is good, as it will make me remember them both and make me chuckle everytime I look at it. So, all this went in, and by the time we were finished we were so giggly that we took crazy photos of mum and me with some of the leftovers that didn’t fit in, and had to be left behind. Off we went on the final leg of our big journey, heading for the high mountains, hoping for a chance to do a bit of skiing, despite weather warnings, in our by now very heavy British car with summer tyres. Optimistic or very foolish, I am not quite sure which.
